During the most recent recession, the healthcare industry proved robust in relation to job stability. This was perhaps truest in Florida, where the industry continues to add jobs to this today.

This can be attributed to a variety of factors, including the growing retirement rate of Florida's baby boomers and the expansion of the Affordable Care Act.

To put this in numbers, Florida spent $2.5 trillion dollars on healthcare in 2012 on a population in which 17.6% of the population is 65 years or older. Yet, paradoxically, Florida's healthcare system remains today one of the worst-ranked in the nation, coming in at number forty-eight among all fifty states and Washington D.C. This is made all the more troubling given the fact that climate change, a rising intensity in natural disasters, and estimated increases in air and water pollution affect Floridians now more than ever.

This contrast between a large population in need of care, a wealth of resources, and a poorly managed system make Florida an ideal state for those health professionals who are truly passionate about making a difference and improving the lives of entire communities at a time.

If this is something that interests you, you might consider investigating the number of prestigious institutions within the state, in which you can pursue an advanced degree in Health Administration.

MHA Programs in Florida

Florida Atlantic University

This MHA Program is offered through FAU’s prestigious College of Business, and comprises a 30 to 31 credit hour degree plan with three different tracks meant to accommodate both full-time students and professionals, and which aims to prepare students for leadership roles in both the public and private sectors of healthcare.

Their On-Campus Executive MHA requires four years of professional experience, and entails one weekend of on-campus classwork per month: students can expect to complete their degree within fifteen months. Their Online Executive plan has the same requisites, but allows students to complete all of their coursework online.

Finally, their standard MHA track is a hybrid program which offers students evening and weekend classes, and requires most students to participate in a 15-20 hour a week internship with a health organization located in Southern Florida: this requirement is waived for those students with at least two years of work experience in the field.

Being a public university, FAU offers different costs of tuition for in-state and out-of-state students

Cost also varies depending on the track chosen. For the standard MHA program, the per credit hour cost for a student with in-state residency status is $369, and $1024 for out-of-state students.

The Executive program, however, does not discriminate in prices: students of any residency can expect to pay $1000 per credit hour for the on-campus route, and $900 per credit hour for the online option.

Like any university, FAY has its associated fees, such as distance learning course fees, material fees, and international student fees. Be sure to check with your prospective university’s website in order to understand the total amount you will have to pay.

University of Central Florida

The University of Central Florida offers an MHA Program through its College of Community Innovation and Education.

Located in the Orlando metropolitan area, this university offers both an Executive and Standard degree plan, ranging from 44 to 51 credit hours in length. Students with three years of work experience may enroll in the Executive option, and may have the option of completing 100 percent of their coursework online, depending on the electives they wish to pursue.

With a focus on the structure of health organizations and the most important issues currently affecting the industry, and a wide network of health professionals in the Orlando area, UCF may be a great option for those who know they want to work with other passionate individuals in order to make a difference within the state of Florida.

For both options, in-state students can expect to pay a base tuition of $370 per credit hour

While out-of-state students can expect a per-credit fee of $1,195.
