Nevada has made strides in recent years to improve the quality of its healthcare system, which for some time has ranked among the bottom percentile among U.S. states. Special emphasis has been placed on health-related education, with new universities and programs being opened in order to train more qualified individuals.
This, in combination with efforts to improve state-wide recruitment and retention and to make structural improvements to the state's system, has quickly changed the prospects for Nevada's future in regards to public health.
If you live in Nevada or are interested in studying in a Nevada institution, pursuing your Master's in Health Administration might prove to be an excellent option for you to advance your career and secure a high-level position in today's evolving health world.
Online (and Onsite) MHA Programs in Nevada
We pulled some example schools offering MHA degree programs so you can understand how to research and find the program you can afford and that is right for you.
University of Nevada, Las Vegas
UNLV is the only campus which offers an accredited MHA program within the Nevada public university system and, at the time of this publishing, the only MHA program within the state.
The university offers both a residential and executive track: the latter meant for students with years of industry experience, who can take advantage of the largely online curriculum in order to balance their work and their education.
It is important to note that the university can not offer online courses to students from every state: to see if your residency makes you eligible for online coursework, check here(source).
Tuition at UNLV varies depending on residency. In-state students pursuing their MHA degree can expect a base fee of $1,530 per credit hour, while out-of-state students are charged $132 more per credit.
Additional technology, graduate service, and distance-learning fees may apply. It is worth noting that the university boasts an average 90 percent employment rate of graduates within three months of graduation (source).
In either track, the degree plan is a multidisciplinary program built around a series of core competencies which have been deemed fundamental for the industry.
Students may opt for a thesis or non-thesis track, depending on their particular interests: the thesis track entails 48 total credit hours, and the non-thesis track entails 45.
Executive track students complete a total of 36 credit hours: while all the coursework is available online, students are required to attend on-campus sessions before their first and fourth semesters. Students of either track will complete an integrative capstone project before graduation.
Common Master's in Health Care Administration Degree Courses
Most colleges divide their MHA degree plans into a series of core competencies. While these competencies may vary from institution to institution, they generally follow a series of core tenets. The Journal of Healthcare Management has named five core competencies in the industry, which we have detailed below (source).
Communication and Relationship Management
Health administrators must adquire these skills to effectively communicate with both clients and teammates. Courses in this competency aim to teach students to create constructive interactions with individuals in the industry.
Leadership
MHA recipients are the future leaders of the industry. Leadership coursework aims to provide students with the skill set to inspire individual performance, in order to improve the overall quality of an organization.
Professionalism
Ethical and professional standards are a key part of any organization, but perhaps none more so than healthcare. Students must not only be acquainted with these standards but have the practical experience necessary to conduct themselves in ethical and professional ways at all times throughout their career.
Knowledge of the Healthcare Environment
While it may seem obvious, administrators must have an in-depth of the healthcare system and the environment in which healthcare managers and providers function. History, law, and epidemiology courses aim to fulfill this requirement.
Business Skills and Knowledge
Health administrators deal with the financial aspects of the industry on a daily basis. Knowledge of finance and economics and essential business principles are critical concepts students attain over the course of their degree.
Health Administration Salaries in Nevada
Medical management is one of the fastest-growing jobs in the state of Nevada, topping in at number eight on the list of most-demanded careers (source).
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the state currently employs nearly 2,000 such professionals, with a 20 percent growth expected in the field through 2024 (source). In Nevada, the average annual wage for these positions is $113,800: substantially higher than the national average.
Most health administrators find work in one of the 55 public and private hospitals in the state, though additional work is to be found in the public sector, as well as in clinics and outpatient centers.
If you are interested in working as an administrator in Nevada and wish to pursue your MHA, now might be the right time to begin.
