A recent study which evaluated over 35 characteristics - such as the cost of care, physicians per capita, and life expectancy - has ranked Georgia as the sixth worst in the nation with regard to public health. Particularly troubling are the state's high infant mortality rates: 7.5 per 1000 live births.

Yet, in spite of this, Georgia is home to some of the best hospitals in the nation, including Emory University Hospital, the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta hospital, and the Piedmont Healthcare hospital system, which comprises seven hospitals and was rated the most technologically advanced hospital system in the country.

This disparity may be explained by the large inequalities in access to healthcare, especially among poorer urban communities and rural towns. The state government's decision to not expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act has certainly been a factor as well, resulting in higher insurance costs for many Georgians.
