This year, the state of Maryland emerged as one of the frontrunners among states with progressive health policy, passing aggressive legislation to protect the state's Affordable Care Act recipients, effectively raising funds for the statewide system and lowering costs for all of its users (source).

Many Marylanders are proud of this, but there is still much work to be done. With approximately 463,000 Marylanders still uninsured, and much-needed legislation still to be passed, now more than ever is a time for individuals passionate about community health to step up as leaders within this critical industry. Health care reform has a bright future in the Old Line State, but it still requires the professionals to see it through.

Common Master's in Health Care Administration Degree Concepts

Most MHA programs are competency-driven degree plans, meant to provide students with a wide range of interdisciplinary skills with which they can approach the health industry and its many facets.

Law, finance, economics, ethics, and epidemiology are just a few of the most important subjects one can study in this degree plan, along with the management and leadership skills necessary for effective administration.

Over the course of their degree, students are also meant to practice critical thinking skills, and obtain the tools necessary for such tasks as project evaluation, project management, team-building and communication, and research.

Health Administration in Maryland

The number of uninsured residents in Maryland has dropped over the past several years and is expected to continue to lower (source). This increasing pool of recipients of healthcare, in combination with progressive legislation meant to improve and expand this care even further, means that Maryland's health industry requires more and more professionals able to effectively organize and lead the public and private systems which compose the industry.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Maryland managerial health professionals enjoy an average annual salary of $118,160: noticeably higher than the national average.

A recent search of job opportunities within the state found positions with private health care companies, the U.S. military, and the Maryland Department of Health, to name just a few.

Whatever your particular interests regarding public health, having an MHA in the state of Maryland is likely to be a large boon for your career, and something to help you open doors to new opportunities for growth. If you are interested in pursuing your MHA in this state, you might want to consider any of the options listed below.

Cornell

A private, Ivy League institution with more than 150 years of history, Cornell is consistently ranked among the top twenty universities in the nation, and among the best in the world. Cornell's College of Human Ecology has offered their award-winning Sloan Program in Health Administration for more than sixty years.

Students of this competitive program train with extremely rigorous management curriculum, meant to ensure that they will be among the best and brightest future leaders of the industry.

Full-time students have access to a plethora of the college's rich resources, including summer internships, industry connections, professional trips around the country, and colloquium series with some of the field's leaders.

The estimated cost for one year of full-time coursework in the standard MHA program is $35,736.

Additional fees will apply. Students are encouraged to contact the Office of Financial Aid: Sloan partners with a number of health-based organizations in order to provide scholarships and graduate loans to incoming students.

The Sloan program also prides itself on its extremely high graduate placement rate, with an average of over 92 percent of graduates finding work within one month of graduation.

Another option exists for professionals who do not have the time to take on a full-time degree plan: an Executive MHA, which can be completed over 18 months via a mix of online courses and on-campus sessions. Students of this program are expected to have at least five years of work experience.
