According to available data, approximately 4.1 percent of Minnesota's 5.57 million residents are uninsured, making it one of the states with the lowest such rates in the nation (source).

And in 2016, Minnesota lawmakers passed legislation lowering premiums across the board and offering discounts to residents with a high risk of dropping their plans. This dedication to ensuring quality healthcare for all Minnesotans means this state may be one of the best in the nation to pursue a career in the health industry.

Healthcare administrators are responsible for the management of the nearly 150 hospitals within the state, and the hundreds of clinical offices, nursing homes, outpatient centers, insurance providers, and other related subindustries within the broader field of health.

If you are interested in this sort of work, and have experience or a BA in a health-related degree, you may wish to consider pursuing your Master's in Health Administration in order to gain new skills and open more doors in your future.

What Can a Health Administrator Do?

Minnesota was recently ranked number two in the nation with regards to its healthcare system, and Minneapolis was named Forbes 2017 Healthiest City in America. Minnesota is also home to the number one health clinic in the country: The Mayo Clinic (source).

With this in mind, it's a small wonder that health professionals are choosing more and more
to relocate to Minnesota in order to advance their career.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly three out of every thousand Minnesotans is employed in the field of healthcare management: a field which enjoys an average salary of $112,970, far higher than the national average (source).

A recent search for health administration within the state showed such results as records administration with the VHA, nursing home administration, as administrative fellows with the Mayo Clinic, and as corporate executives of regional healthcare providers.

Whatever your passions or interests, an MHA is likely to broaden your perspectives and your opportunities, and Minnesota might be one of the best states in the nation to take the next step in your career.

MHA Programs Available In Minnesota

Minnesota is home to a number of high-quality institutions which offer MHA programs. Below, we have listed a few which we believe are indicative of the wider offer in the state.

University of Minnesota

The University of Minnesota is a public research institution with campuses in Minneapolis and Saint Paul, and is consistently ranked among the best one hundred schools in the nation, as well as among the best one hundred values (source). Students interested in pursuing their MHA at this institution have two offers: a full-time MHA option and an Executive track.

Students with minimal or no work experience may wish to consider the full-time option, which comprises 60 credit hours divvied up over a 21 month period.

The coursework places a special emphasis on leadership skills with regards to health environments. In addition, full-time students participate in a ten-week residency meant to give them hands-on experience with real healthcare scenarios in Minnesota.

For students currently working in the industry, the Executive track might be a more convenient option. Executive students complete a majority of their credit work online, in cohorts of approximately thirty students, over a twenty-five month period. Over the course of this period, students are only required to be on campus for five separate five-day sessions.

As a public school, the university charges non-resident students a higher fee: in-state students can expect a base tuition of $980 per credit hour, while out-of-state students are charged $1287 per hour. The Executive format, however, does not discriminate in pricing, and students of any residency can expect a base fee of $1607 per credit hour.

Additional fees apply to each format, and interested students should contact the Tuition Office for more information. Worth noting is the fact that alumni of this program have the benefit of forming part of the most extensive MHA alumni network in the nation. In addition, the university claims that one hundred percent of their graduates obtain jobs or administrative fellowships in the same year as their graduation.

Saint Mary's University of Minnesota

Saint Mary's, a private institution with nearly one hundred years of history in the city of Winona, offers two Master's in Health and Human Services Administration programs. Intended for recent graduates as well as experienced professionals, this degree plan is offered in on-campus, hybrid, and online formats, and offers six different start times per year.

No matter how students choose to approach the program, it comprises 36 credit hours, and is generally completed within two years.

Curriculum focuses on preparing administrators for the myriad tasks they will be faced with upon entering the workforce. Health finance, health ethics, human resources in the health sector, and leadership skills are just some of the curriculum students will encounter throughout this plan. Students also complete a capstone project near the end of their degree plan, in which they integrate theoretical knowledge and practical experience to address a real-world issue of their choosing.
