This year, New Jersey became the second state in the nation to pass a mandate requiring residents to obtain health insurance, or pay a fee.

Also in this year, 250,000 New Jerseyians signed up for ACA plans, and an additional half-million people were granted health insurance through Medicaid expansions.

And as of 2017, approximately nine percent of the 7.65 million people below the age of 65 were without health insurance; given the recent law, this number is likely to lower over the next several years.

Ranked number five in the nation with regards to public health by U.S. News and World Report, and with a steadily increasing demand for health professionals due to progressive policies, many in the industry are choosing to relocate to New Jersey, where they where they work in hospitals and clinics or start their own businesses in the health sector.

If you live in New Jersey or are interested in pursuing a degree in health administration in the state, you have a number of option available to you.

Common Master’s in Health Care Administration Degree Concepts

You might already know that students who pursue an MHA receive an interdisciplinary education which tends to focus on improving health care, health systems, and policy.

In addition to the specific health industry curriculum, students are usually taught concepts more associated with an MBA, as economics, management skills, and law.

Below, we have listed several examples of courses you are likely to find in an MHA degree plan.

Principles of Healthcare Administration

This course focuses on teaching students how healthcare organizations operate from the top down, as well as the skillsets required to successfully run a complex operation. Students generally explore leadership traits, as well as health governance and regulation specific to their state.

Population Health

These and similar courses aim to introduce students to myriad determinants of health in a society, such as economic, environmental, social, and behavioral factors. Students are meant to gain the ability to analyze these factors in the context of caregiving organizations.

Leadership

Most MHAs include some sort of leadership curriculum, given the fact that recipients of the degree usually go on to work in managerial or administrative positions within large organizations. Students are introduced to different leadership styles, traits, and strategies used for complex problem-solving.

Online (and Onsite) MHA Programs in New Jersey

We wanted to highlight a few example universities and their MHA programs being offered. Try to pay attention to the unique aspects of whatever schools you are considering to make your selection easier.

Rutgers University

With a history of research and academia dating back to before America’s independence, Rutgers is the largest and arguably one of the most prestigious university in the state.

Its Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy offers two different tracks for students interested in obtaining their Health Administration degree: a traditional track and an executive one, both with a high focus on the relationship between health care, health systems, and health policy.

Being a public university, Rutgers charges lower fees to in-state residents.

For the Traditional MHA, they can expect to pay a base tuition $8,424 for a full semester of coursework; out-of-state residents, however, are charged a higher tuition of $14,028.

For professionals with at least five years of experience in the health industry who are looking to obtain executive level positions in anywhere from public hospitals to non-profits, the Executive MHA is a two-year, 45-credit program which offers Saturday classes in addition to online coursework.

The traditional MHA is for students who can attend on-campus coursework. Though the recommended completion time is two years, students are welcome to accommodate to whatever pace suits them and can take a mixture of online and in-person classes.

For the Executive program, resident students can expect a base tuition of $6,201 per 9-credit cluster.

As with most programs, out-of-state students will pay higher and this program isn’t any different. If you are coming from out-of-state, you will be paying a higher fee of $10,322.

As always, standard additional campus fees apply, and students are encouraged to investigate financial aid packages.

Seton Hall University

Seton Hall’s MHA program allows students to complete their degree entirely online, on campus, or in a hybrid manner. However a student chooses to complete their degree, the program comprises 42 credit hours and is generally completed in two years.

Students who pursue the online option are placed into small Learning Teams; while the majority of the coursework can be completed online, students are required to attend on-campus sessions with their teams on three occasions throughout the degree plan. These intensive residency sessions are five days in length and occur at the beginning, middle, and end of the degree plan.

For students of either the online or in-campus option, the base tuition for the degree is $1,212 per credit hour.

Students should note that those attending on-campus classes will be charged additional university and technology fees, but are exempt from the $500 online fee.

Students of either program will also complete a capstone project near the end of their coursework: this is a standard among MHA programs nationwide and allows students to use their knowledge and skills to address real-world issues within the field.

In the last year alone, New Jersey has experienced a growth of over 20,000 jobs in the health and education industries.

At the same, government policies have aimed to lower the cost of healthcare premiums for all residents, and thus increase the total amount of New Jerseyians with access to health care.

As far as the professionals concerned, the New York-Jersey City metropolitan division is ranked among the most well-paid in the nation for health managerial professionals

Their average salary in 2017 was $137,980. State-wide, this average drops to $118,290, though it is worth noting that this is still higher than the national average.
