Health Services Organizational Behavior

Graduates of this program will be expected to be able to function as leaders within the complex, high-stress environments of modern-day healthcare systems. This and similar courses are meant to introduce students to the skills and knowledge necessary to effectively manage people in a hospital, clinic, or similar site.

Health Law

This introductory level law course is meant to introduce public health students to the legal issues they are likely to face as leaders of health organizations. Patients’ rights, employee relations, and institutional liability are some of the most common concepts future administrators often need to be acquainted with.

What is certain is that this field is growing, with an expected 20 percent growth rate through 2026.

If you are passionate about this line of work, and you live in Pennsylvania or are interested in studying with a Pennsylvania university, you might consider some of the different institutional options below.

MHA Programs in Pennsylvania

You will have several options in selecting an MHA program in Pennsylvania. We wanted to highlight some example schools and their MHA programs so you can get an idea of the concepts you may learn in each one.

Drexel

If you are looking for a flexible mix of online an on-campus coursework, you may want to consider Drexel University’s MHA program. Offered through the well-ranked College of Nursing and Health Professions, this program is meant to train students with the skill necessary to pursue senior leadership positions in health care systems and related fields such as insurance and research.

Students of this 2 to 3 year, 45-credit program will learn from doctoral faculty with ample experience in the hospitals, clinics and health-related non-profits of Pennsylvania and the world. Students can choose to manage their schedule with substantial flexibility in accordance with their needs: most coursework is available online, with a mandatory 5-day campus residency. If you are interested in this program, be sure to investigate the requirements of this residency, especially if you do not live in Pennsylvania.

Applicants are recommended to have three years work experience and a minimum GPA of 3.3, though all interested students are encouraged to apply.

The current base tuition is $855 per credit hour, though financial aid packages and special rates for military members are available.

Penn State World Campus

Pennsylvania State University is a world-renowned system of colleges and research facilities located throughout the state. Currently ranked as one of the best universities in the nation, this institution offers both an on-campus and online track for obtaining your Master’s in Health Administration.

Making use of the college’s extensive industry connections, this program places a heavy focus on practical experience: in addition to curriculum competencies, students will complete ten-week residencies with local health organizations, and will work with other students on a capstone project meant to serve the strategic needs of real hospitals, clinics, and NGOs in the region.

Full time students can expect to complete this degree in two years.

As of 2016, yearly base tuition was $9,982 for in-state students, and $17,133. It is worth noting that 38 percent of students in the same year were partially or completely refunded through grants and financial aid services.

The online option, offered in conjunction with Penn State’s World Campus, is meant to allow professionals to have the flexibility to study where and when they want. Similar to the standard MHA in scope, though with no residency requirement, this program is meant for students with five years of experience in the field.
